Typeface Specimen: IvyMode

Featured in the Dominican University Annual Juried Art Show

A typeface specimen is a visual representation or catalog that showcases how a typeface looks, behaves, and performs.

IvyMode is a high-contrast, sans-serif display typeface designed by Jan Maack and published by The Ivy Foundry. It is celebrated for its blending of geometric structure with organic elegance, heavily influenced by the tight typographic styles of legendary designer Herb Lubalin.

While it is technically a sans-serif font, the horizontal and thin vertical terminals subtly flare outward, gently mimicking the look of classic serifs. There is a dramatic, sharp contrast between thick and thin line weights, given an extra touch of character via a moderate angled stress. To allow for tight letter-spacing without overlapping, the diagonal legs on letters like K, R, and X are chopped off cleanly in a vertical slice. The font features distinctive diamond-shaped dots (tittles) on the i and j, as well as matching diamond-shaped punctuation marks. Letters like A, M, N, V, and W feature aggressively pointed apexes and vertices. On the M and N, the diagonal lines extend slightly beyond the left vertical stem for an extra geometric punch. It contains an expansive OpenType set of inventive ligatures and interlocking alternates meant for sophisticated, artistic layout design. The font comes in five distinct weights—Thin, Light, Regular, SemiBold, and Bold—each paired with its own true italic variation. It features a tall x-height and straightforward letterforms, which means that while it is primarily used as a striking header font, it remains unexpectedly readable for short blocks of body copy.

I chose the typeface Ivy Mode for my own personal branding identity as a graphic designer because it reflects both my personal identity and my professional style. The font’s elegant and modern characteristics create a balance between creativity and sophistication, which are qualities I strive to represent in my work. Its refined details and expressive forms communicate confidence, individuality, and a strong sense of visual storytelling. As part of my branding, Ivy Mode helps portray me as someone who values thoughtful design, aesthetics, and professionalism while still maintaining a unique and artistic personality.
